That was Meant to Happen…

There's a famous phrase in life that most people know.

Fake it till you make it.

Diving is a surprisingly difficult place to fake things.

If your buoyancy is bad, everyone can see it.

If you're breathing like you're trying to inflate the ocean, everyone can hear it.

If your mask is full of water, you're wearing the evidence.

And yet...

Divers have a remarkable ability to accidentally look competent.

For a glorious moment, everyone assumes you knew exactly what you were doing.

Including you.

The truth is that a surprising amount of diving consists of quietly hoping nobody noticed that the last thirty seconds were mostly guesswork.

The Perfect Giant Stride

You entered cleanly.

Mask stayed on.

Fins stayed on.

Reg stayed in.

You looked like somebody from a training manual.

You will not attempt to recreate it.

The Advanced Navigation Demonstration

Surfaced directly next to the boat.

Had absolutely no idea where the boat was five seconds earlier.

Nodded as if the compass had been involved.

The SMB Flex

Released it cleanly.

No tangles.

No accidental launch of your reel into orbit.

Pretended this was your standard procedure.

The Perfect Bubble Ring

A mandatory safety stop procedure.

You've never managed one.

Everyone else produces perfect circles with suspicious ease.

Then, one day, a vaguely circular bubble emerges from your regulator.

You immediately assume mastery.

The Self Problem Solve

Internally solving three equipment problems.

Externally looked very composed.

Turns out the regulator helps.

The Shark Spot

Looked around because you were confused.

Found a shark.

Accepted credit immediately.

The Fish Identification

Confidently said,

"Juvenile emperor angelfish."

It was.

This was unfortunate, because you were guessing.

The Current Expert

Drifted exactly where the guide wanted the group.

Pure coincidence.

Spent the rest of the dive looking like you understood currents.

The Shore Entry

Timed the waves perfectly.

Walked in without stumbling.

Witnessed by several people.

Will think about it for months.

The Buoyancy Compliment

Someone said,

"Your buoyancy looked really good today."

You thanked them.

You had been trying not to crash into coral for forty minutes.

Every diver has a collection of these moments.

The lucky navigation.

The perfect giant stride.

The fish identification that was absolutely a guess.

It still is…

Nobody gets away with it forever.

But we do get away with it just long enough to leave the water thinking,

"I'm starting to get the hang of this."

Which is fortunate.

Because the next dive is usually waiting with a completely different opinion.
